Why Ruby Rings Are Not So Popular

Posted on June 8, 2010 | Category: Featured, Jewelry Trivia

Ruby jewelry as a merchandise category has never been as popular as those of the other two precious stones emerald and sapphire. It could be that in the US the cooler colored gemstones have historically been more popular in gemstones jewelry and even in engagement rings at least in the general commercial market.

However rubies are special in their own right. They are frightfully expensive in the very good qualities especially when they are certified to be untreated. Ruby rings are the most popular type of Ruby jewelry because most women like to purchase their birthstone in a ring over an earring or a bracelet or some other exotic type of jewelry like an anklet or tiara.

The most common type of Ruby Ring is the Ruby diamond ring. Because the larger stones are more expensive you see less of the ruby engagement ring style they see of Ruby bands. Movie band rings typically have round or oval rubies alternating with same size diamonds going either part of the way of around or all the way around the shank. Some women like to have colored stones in their wedding bands especially when it is their birthstone.

An eternity ruby ring is a nice complement to a diamond engagement ring. It adds a bit of color and plays up the brightness and brilliance of the diamonds. Some women like to stack more than one eternity band against their engagement ring and the recent trend has been to put one eternity band in front of and one behind the engagement ring to give it a more full look.

The most common type of Ruby band is the half shank band with small oval 4 mm x 3 mm rubies separated by two small half pointer diamonds in either white gold or yellow gold. Small oval ruby gemstones are easier to match in terms of size and color than are the round rubies. This is why you see them more often used in Ruby and diamond band rings and huggy earrings.
