Where to buy Faroy Candles

Posted on January 29, 2010 | Category: Decorating Trivia

Born in 1950, when cash-strapped college friends Preston Frazier and Addison McElroy created them to give as Christmas presents that year, Faroy candles went from family enthusiasm to full-fledged business after interest came from a Houston fashion-store, a Neiman-Marcus partner, and a New York trade show visit.

Buying Faroy candles was and remains mostly a proposition for specialty shops and certain large retailers—Pier 1, Bed Bath & Beyond, Linens & Things, Kohl’s, Dillards, and Sears—most of whom sell candles made by Faroy’s parent company (since 1998), Home Fragrance Holdings, under their own brands but also sell select Faroy varieties as well.

However, Home Fragrance fell apart in bankruptcy in 2006, after a combination of market-glutting candle imports and the company’s deep-discount contract with Pier 1 proved a problem the company could not overcome via proceeds from other customers. Though long since made by factory and not by hand, Home Fragrance made the candles to Frazier and McElroy’s specifications and they continued to enjoy a reputation for long burning and solid craftsmanship, in a broad array of colors, scents, and styles.

Today you can buy Faroy candles almost exclusively by way of CDN Systems, a Texas-based asset management company, which is offering bulk lots of Faroy candles. They often sell through eBay; a 27 January 2010 search query on the popular auction site turned up, among others, a lot of six 3×4” pomegranate-and-plum scented, chunk-textured pillar candles branded for Sears; a box of 24 citrus-scented votive candles branded for Dillards; a 4×10” fig-and-willow scented pillar, also branded for Dillard’s; a lot of six Dillard’s-branded 3×4 sea glass pillars; a lot of four 5×4 Sears-branded citrus tea scented pillars; and, a lot of six 3×6 Sears-branded fresh fig scented pillars.

CDN also sells Faroy candles through its own Web store, at cdnsystems.com, including a lot of six Dillard’s-branded 4×4 sandalwood pillars and a single Dillard’s-branded 4×10 citrus-scented pillar.
