What to expect at your Dental cleaning

Insurance companies will pay for 2 dental cleanings per year. A cleaning is an important part of good oral care as it allows your Memphis Dental office to examine your teeth and gums to make sure you do not have decay and bacteria occurring. One of the cleaning appointments usually includes getting x-rays taken of your teeth. The x-rays will help the dentist to see into the tooth and look for signs of decay and weakness.

If you have never had a dental cleaning you may not know what to expect. Here are a few things that will happen when you visit a Dentist in Memphis to have a cleaning done.

  1. X-rays will be taken by a dental assistant to help the dentist look for dark spots that indicate decay within the dentin. If you have specific teeth that are bothering you, additional x-rays will be taken of these problem areas.
  2. The dental hygienist will clean and floss your teeth using a fluoride paste that will polish the teeth and remove any bacteria that is starting to grow on the teeth. They will also use special tools to check on the gums to see if they are receding.
  3. After your teeth have been polished, the dentist will come in and examine the teeth and look for cavities and weak spots on the teeth. They will also use additional tools to remove plaque that may be building up around the gum line.

At the end of your dental cleaning, your dentist will talk to you about your oral health and problems they may have detected. They will also show you how to properly care for your teeth and gums in order to prevent problems. In addition to discussing proper oral care with you, your dentist will also suggest toothpaste and floss that can help you with your oral care needs.
