Book early
If your are going to be hiring wedding cars, book as far ahead as possible to get your first choice, particularly if you plan to get married during the popular October-April period.
Read the fine print
Most companies charge by the hour and the rate is base on the number of cars you hire. Expect to pay a surcharge if the car has to travel outside the company’s limits (usually a 30km radius). A deposit will be required at the time of booking, with the balance paid at least a week before the wedding date. Ask about cancellation fees, breakdown policies, and accident insurance. Always get a written quote and contract.
Confirmation
Reconfirm your wedding car hire bookings a week or two before the wedding day and make sure the company has a detailed list of pick-up and drop-of addresses and times.
Your own transport
If your are using private vehicles, have someone in charge of detailing just before the day and providing them spotlessly clean, roadworthy, filled with petrol and decorated to your instructions. The drivers should have mobile phones, maps and details of routes and pickup times. Most importantly, have a contingency plan ready in case of breakdowns.
Decorations
Subtlety is the trend these days when it comes to dressing up your wedding transport. Most couples opt for a simple, broad satin band along the bonnet of the vehicle and a few flowers inside. Decorating the getaway car is traditionally an option for the more mischievous guests – just suggest they use something that will wash off easily, such as shaving cream, and don’t use adhesive tapes that will strip the paint off!
Guests
Consider your guests in your plans and arrange transport for those guests (such as grandparents) who might not have their own. A double-decker bus can be a fun and practical option to move wedding parties and guests around. It is also helpful to send your guests maps, directions and transport options as they RSVP to the wedding invitation.
