Using Puppy Pads for Housetraining

Posted on March 26, 2010 | Category: Pet Trivia

Puppy pads are large plastic lined absorbent sheets that are used to potty train your new pet. Young dogs will need to potty several times a day and to properly housebreak them you will have to be a devoted doggie parent. Watch for signs that he has to “go.” It will usually take the form of a whine, walking around sniffing an area, and finally deciding on a spot. Many puppy housetraining pads have an additional scent which can help your pup decide to make the absorbent sheet its favorite spot. When you see the behavior that indicates that nature is calling quickly pick it up and place it on the puppy training pad issuing a command that is simple such as “go”, “go potty” or just “potty.” Use the same command every time you place him on the puppy housebreaking pad. The same command should be used when he potties outside. Be sure to find a spot you want your pup to learn to use and set it down there every time and use the command

A great environment for an active young dog is a crate situated in a quiet place with a puppy exercise pen next to it. This environment provides a place to sleep or just lay there quietly as well as a place to play and exercise in. Young animals not only need to feel safe and secure, they also need plenty of activity for proper development as they grow. The puppy pad should be placed in the exercise pen, not the crate, as canines do not like to have their sleeping or safe place soiled.

When training your young dog remember that whatever you do it should be done the same way and at the same time everyday. Do not confuse him by changing the routine daily. Commands should be short and with authority. Do not hit or shout, because after all accidents do happen.
