Most people don’t give gluten much thought. A naturally occurring enzyme in most wheat and rye bread products, it’s simply not something people take much account of. However, there are a certain number of people, about one percent of the population that has a reaction to gluten which is called celiac disease. This disease manifests itself much the way an allergic reaction would, and renders sufferers unable to consumer gluten products for the rest of their lives.
With the rise of understanding of those who are unable to consume this particular creation, a new kind of following has emerged and gluten free cooking has begun to become more popular all the time. Gluten free food has even gained a certain level of respect from those who are able to consume regular wheat and rye products and has gained a bit of a cult following. Nowadays there are many different sites on the web that show people exactly how to cook without that one special ingredient that makes eating a danger for celiac sufferers.
While gluten free cooking used to be something that was almost an underground movement a simple Google search will bring up dozens of sites that are all aimed at helping anyone who doesn’t want to, or can’t consume this particular type of starch. There are also quite a few products available now for people wanting to cook gluten free, such as gluten free flours and other gluten free ingredients.
While there is a definite difference in the taste and texture of gluten free foods, it does not necessarily mean that these foods are somehow inedible or even undesirable. This is not bread’s version of tofu, which is almost universally lauded as the reason people are able to go vegetarian, and universally hated by those who don’t want to go that direction. Gluten free cooking is almost exactly like regular cooking, with just one ingredient removed from the equation. There is still a need to make sure that if you’re suffering from celiac disease, that you are clear which food products contain that ingredient you can no longer consume.
