Mini notebooks computers, also known as netbooks, are a fairly new yet and evolving branch of laptops computers. Mini notebooks are compact, light and usually quite cheap to buy. Most can be purchased for under $500(US) dollars. What made the mini notebook so popular was its ‘Atom’ CPU processor developed by Intel. The Atom processor, was much cheaper to produce than other CPU’s and therefore PC’s using it could sell for a much lower price.

A mini notebook has lower hardware specs and therefore a slower performance than most full-sized laptops, but they still work great for the average user. While you may not be able to do heavy gaming or graphics work on a netbook, they’ll suit you just fine for checking your mail, taking notes, or just browsing the internet. Most mini notebooks do not come with a DVD-ROM, if you need one, its recommended that you purchase a external USB DVD drive.

With the exception of Apple, the majority of leading pc manufacturers have produced various types of mini laptops, with the lead manufactures being Acer and Asus. As netbooks become more and more popular, brands are continuing to improve both their style and performance.

One of the first netbooks was developed by ASUS, the early mini notebooks only utilized between 8-120 Gigabytes of hard drive space, and had a screen width of about 8.9 inches. As more and more people began buying netbooks, improvements were made to the keyboard and screen size. Now the standard for screen size for most netbooks is at least 10.1” and the keyboard is easier to type on. As time goes on, changes are also being made regarding performance as well. Previously the performance standard was a 1.6 Ghz Atom CPU, now they are being upgraded to faster speeds, higher graphics cards are being added, and battery life has also been increased.
