Most people who are thinking about getting a dog decide on the simple option of buying a dog kennel from their nearest store. This always seems like the easiest option and people know that they can get guidance on the type of kennel that is right for them and their dog. However, building a dog kennel is not as difficult as you might imagine, though there are some problems to overcome.
A major problem that some people have with dog kennel building is that they use the wrong type of wood for the job. Buying the cheapest timber available is not a good idea you need to remember that the kennel will be subjected to all kinds of weather. Cheap wood is likely to expand when wet, crack when dry and lose its shape after a short period of time. In the long run you are better off buying better quality wood as then you won’t have to replace it a few years down the line. Before you even start to build a kennel you will need to paint all the panels with a good wood protector to give the wood an even longer life.
Another difficulty with kennel building is that people often do not make them of a large enough size. Remember that your dog needs to be able to stand up comfortably, without bashing his head on the roof. He should also be able to turn around and to lie down, both on his side and with his legs stretched out in front of him. However, it shouldn’t be so large that his body heat all escapes.
Finally, you need to think about insulation. It may be tempting to think that as wood is a warm material that they won’t need insulation but by covering the floor, walls and roof you will ensure that your dog is warm in the winter and kept cool during the summer months.
