I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a coffee fanatic and I love nothing more than to produce an extremely flavorful, rich cup of coffee. While most people dread the thought of waking up early in the morning, I actually look forward to it in a way, as it allows me the opportunity to brew a fresh cup of coffee that I can enjoy in peace. Of course, it wasn’t always so easy to brew consistently enjoyable coffee. I’ve gone through several different small coffee makers and pounds of beans in my quest to find coffee nirvana. It wasn’t until I found the Aeropress that all my worries disappeared.
Similar in some ways to a French Press, the Aeropress uses pressure to push a mixture of ground coffee and water through a filter. Where the device differs from the press pot is in its operation, which is quicker and cleaner. Think of the Aeropress as sort of a miniature French Press that brews concentrated coffee to which the user adds hot water. The Aeropress also uses a paper filter as opposed to the mesh screen filter found in most press pots. This is a good feature, as it prevents sediment from entering into the finished cup. No longer do you need to avoid drinking the last quarter inch of coffee for fear of gulping down coffee grounds. With the Aeropress, the first sip is as clean as the last.
To be certain, the Aeropress is not an automatic coffee maker and does require some work on the part of the user. By work I mean pushing down on the plunger, so don’t get too worried. The Aeropress is available from retailers such as Amazon or directly through the manufacturer’s website for about $25.00, which is cheap enough to try it without worry. For me, a coffee aficionado, it will likely be the last small coffee maker I ever own, at least until I’m no longer able to push down on the plunger.
