Tennis Elbow: Not Only Happens to Tennis Players

Posted on July 1, 2010 | Category: Sports Trivia

Recently, does the joint of your elbow often hurt? Does that nagging pain hit you hard and fast leaving you unable to properly bend or fold your arm? Does it happen without warning? Does it make your everyday activities like lifting your coffee cup, tying your shoelaces, buttoning your shirt turn into extremely painful episodes?

If your answer to all of these concerns is a big yes, then know that you might be suffering from an arm disorder called tennis elbow or lateral epicondylitis. Tennis elbow has been the topic of numerous jokes for the past couple of years, but you need to understand that there is nothing funny at all about this condition! If you leave it untreated, your once mild condition can escalade into something more painful, long lasting and will take years before you can fully recover from it and will also have you spending much of your precious cash on medical bills.

Although this condition is coined tennis elbow, the real fact of the matter is that tennis players are not the only ones who are susceptible to this injury. Researches have shown that almost ninety percent of tennis elbow patients have never even set foot on a tennis court before or even laid hands on a tennis racket. This typically strikes people in the age range of thirty-five and above, but sometimes it can also affect people thirty-five and below.

Most of those who suffer from it do not even know how or when they acquired it. The initial symptoms usually include slight soreness along the joint of the elbow. This will then be followed by the tightening of the muscles along your wrist and forearm. If you tend to ignore the pain, it can turn for the worst and you will be left without any other option but surgery for lateral epicondylitis.

The easiest way in order for you to treat this condition is to simply rest your injured arm. Resting the arm is a great tennis elbow treatment. You can also take NSAID’s or non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs; however, just make sure to take such medications in moderation since excessive usage can cause certain side effects.
