If you want to quit drinking booze then you need to take action. This is always going to be the bottom line and taking action implies several things. Let’s take a look at what it really means to “take action” when it comes to addressing a problem like alcoholism:
* Taking action implies making a firm decision. Many people who are trapped in a drinking problem or cycle of addiction often wish that things were different, but they do not necessarily do anything in order to change their situation. They have a saying that “if nothing changes then nothing changes.” In order to hit on a real solution, the individual must step up to the plate and decide to make a real change in their life. Willingness is key.
* In order to stop drinking alcohol, the alcoholic must ask for help. Why is this necessary? Because if they knew how to stop on their own, then they would. The fact is that any real alcoholic is going to need help in order to make the leap into sobriety. If they could solve their own drinking problem with their own devices, then that is not as serious of an addiction. Real alcoholism is defined by the need for outside help.
* Follow through is the key to success in recovery. What is the key to success in life other than consistent, positive action? What it is the key to any major life change other than setting up new powerful habits that you carry out on a daily basis? And so it is with recovery. In order to stop drinking in the long run, you have to build a new life from making consistent positive changes. It is not enough to merely put down the drink and abstain for a while….the alcoholic must push themselves to grow and explore a new world for themselves. Anything less will not produce lasting recovery.
