Simon and His Dog Food Allergy

Posted on May 24, 2010 | Category: Pet Trivia

Simon was lying on the floor chewing his feet when Holly came home. She had been so busy recently; he didn’t think that she had noticed how miserable he really was. For the past few weeks Simon woke her up every morning, scratching by the side of the bed.

Simon hoped that today might be different. He walked up to her immediately after she walked in the door and started whining. Holly bent down to the Golden Retriever and scratched him on the head. She told him “shake” and he raised his paw. She gasped when she saw the mostly bare paw. The hair was almost completely chewed away.

“What have you been doing to yourself?”, she asked. At that time, she started taking a closer look at Simon and realized that he had an area on his hip where his coat was matted and some hair was missing. She went to the telephone and made a phone call. The next thing he knew Simon was being called to get into the car.

When Simon got out of the vehicle, he quickly realized where he was. This was his vet’s office and he had been here a week or so before. They went inside and he sniffed around to find out what dogs have been there recently. He was scared, but he had to admit everything smelled very interesting.

After they were invited back into the examining room, Simon overheard Holly talking to the vet. “I thought you said that his new allergy dog food would help him”, Holly said to the vet. “It takes up to 12 weeks for the dog to make any noticeable improvement when switching to a new food. If the dog food allergy symptoms continue to get worse, I can give him another steroid shot.”, the vet replied. Holly said she didn’t want to do that again and decided they would wait and see if he got any better.

A few weeks later, Simon was feeling much better and a lot of the itchiness was gone and he didn’t think he’d scratched at all today. He was glad that he could watch after Holly and she would watch after him, after all they were best friends.
