A lanyard is really a rope, strap, or cord that helps us to hold on to an item. The origin of Lanyards is military, they where first used as leather straps to help the soldier keep hold of his sword in the heat of battle. More common uses of lanyards these days, by the military and civilians alike are cords on whistles to hang around your neck. Smaller cords on cameras and MP3 players to wrap around your wrist are also some of the most common modern day uses of lanyards.
Since the first lanyards where used, there have been different designs, colors and motifs to help identify their owners. In the military different regiments and ranks would have different styles and colors to help identify them. Designs and motifs are still used to help identify their owners today but more so in the corporate world. Many large corporations with large numbers of employees use lanyards with their own logos and motifs. This is not just for the normal reasons of advertisement and company pride, but can also be a key part of company security.
Large companies in various industries are subject to corporate espionage, as well as fraud or theft, so when a company is so large that there are too many employees for it to be reasonable to expect all of them to recognize each other, an I.D card with a company issued lanyard is often issued. These can be made difficult to copy so possible fraudsters will have difficulty gaining access to company property where they are not welcome. They are often bright and easily visible to help people moving inter office recognize colleagues they have not met before.
Lanyards can be made from many different materials, generally, they will need to be worn for long periods of time, so being lightweight and comfortable are very important factors. Find more information at Lanyards Central.
