Purple Rugs for Retro Interiors

Posted on December 16, 2009 | Category: Fashion Trivia

retro_rugOK, here’s an interesting but tacky trivia question for you.  What is the ugliest color ever used as a design statement in home design.  And, while we’re testing your brain power, where was that color used the most.  It could be furniture, flooring, paint, wall covers or lighting.  If you guessed orange, you’d be close.  I know the house we bought in the late 90′s still had grotesque orange shag in the dining room, chocolate brown shag in the bedrooms.  But, our trivia quiz goes even deeper than that.   In the seventies we were very fond of purple I seem to remember especially for interiors. I had a “wonderful” purple bed cover and a purple rug to match. Now that retro is a well-established and respected style option when designing interiors, the purple rug is back in force.

You can either go the whole hog and design a full room with a seventies retro theme (purple lava lamp and psychedelic floor cushions optional) or you can add a touch of retro to your contemporary living room or bedroom and bring it bang up to date.

Purple is a glorious color linked with all sorts of deep meanings including magic, creativity and fertility as well as evil and death. This makes it a color to take care with as it can be overpowering. You would not want to decorate your whole room in purple but a purple rug can add a wonderful focal point to a plain floor. Team it with a few other purple accessories to tie your color scheme together.

If you want the full retro look you are unlikely to find original rugs dating back to the seventies in great condition although there are probably some available online on the auction sites like eBay. If you want a fresh look to your interior, you are better to look for new rugs in retro style. A typical seventies rug would have thick shag pile or it might have a geometric pattern in psychedelic colors including purple.

But you don’t have to stick to a typical retro shag or psychedelic patterned rug to add a touch of purple to your floor. You will find contemporary purple and black rugs with large geometric shapes and purple mixed with white and beige or green too in modern designs. In fact any color you need (and which does not clash) you will find mixed with purple.
