Tornadoes, earthquakes, hurricanes, and other types often occur, and with little notice. You must also plan a method of obtaining clean water. This can be done with water purifying tablets, or with specially made filtration bottles. A blanket and extra set of clothing is also important. Other essential items include a first aid kit, waterproof matches, and basic tools.

A survival pack can be purchase by numerous distributors. The costs of these packs will depend on what you want in them. A home made pack can be cheaper, and customized to fit your needs. Make sure that there are enough items available for each member of your family. Make sure everything is age appropriate.

The first 72 hours of an emergency can be the most critical. Emergency assistance may not be able to reach you during this time. Instead of reacting by panicking, you can be putting your emergency plan into action. Basic knowledge and a simple kit can a family alive in a time of crisis.
