Notes on Labrador Training

Susana Labradors trains puppies for clients.  We also teach our clients how to train their own puppies.  Puppies love to learn. They love to please their owner. They also have a quick learning curve.
The Labrador is a highly trainable breed. Lab puppies are like sponges…soaking up new experiences. (Oops, did I say sponge? Don’t leave any sponges around where the puppy can get to it).  All of the basic dog obedience training commands such as Sit, Down, Stay and Heel will be very quick to learn.  The daily repetition, however, takes time. If you want a well-trained Labrador retriever, we suggest that you complete five minutes of training every day for the next few months.

Never let your new puppy jump up on you…totally NOT cool.  What if your friend stops by wearing WHITE? How should you take care of the jumping? That’s easy. Simply enforce a slight knee jab in the chest or slightly step on the puppy’s toes.  This will take care of jumping.
Chewing? When your puppy gets a hold of something to chew up, remember that IT’S YOUR FAULT. You left it there. Replace it with a proper dog chew toy.
I have trained all Lab “Colors”, but have found a little difference in each color group. The Black Labrador puppy is hearty, but a bit stubborn at times. The Yellow Labrador puppy is a respectful dog, but many can be a bit timid. Then, there’s the Chocolate Lab. The Chocolate Labrador puppy is a coin toss. They can be gregarious, shy,… but most are a bit goofy!
Labrador Retrievers respond best to positive, non violent, reward-based training methods. You have to set the boundaries. And although you love your dog, they must not cross the line. Always use a thin choke chain. It teaches them to be obedient without causing damage to muscle tissue. Just a few quick tugs on a choke chain and your puppy will know who the boss is.
Please, just five minutes per day.  Enforce the same routines: Walk, Heel, Stop/Sit, Sit, Lay Down commands.  Repetition will ensure that you will have a great future together.
