Methods For Combating Insomnia

A common problem in today’s over-scheduled; over-worked and over-stressed culture is insomnia. This is the medical term for the condition in which people are unable to fall asleep or remain asleep for an adequate amount of time. Curing insomnia is a top priority for many people because of the very detrimental effects that lack of sleep can have on one’s life. In order to treat or prevent insomnia or sleeplessness, it is important to first understand what is causing it.

The largest cause of insomnia appears to be emotional issues. This includes feelings for fear, worry or guilt. People will tend to dwell on things that happened in the past that they can longer change or things that might happen in the future. This can keep a person up late at night well past when they would like to be sleeping. Many studies have shown that simply acknowledging these feelings and discussing them with a trusted friend can put your mind at ease and allow you to properly rest.

Another main contributing factor is diet. People eat foods high in sugar and caffeine throughout the entire day and well into the evening hours. It has been recommended that you should limit any caffeine intake after lunch to help your body properly metabolize the caffeine before you need to sleep. Also poor eating habits can cause stomachaches and headaches which make sleep difficult.

A simple, free way to help with combating insomnia issues is through meditation. Listen to peaceful music while sitting in a dim room. This will calm your mind and your body and prepare you for a full night’s sleep. If you have not found talk therapy, diet changes or meditation to help with insomnia, your doctor may recommend OTC or prescribed medications.
