Bullies are a problem that many people have to deal with at some point in their lives. As the saying goes, you can run, but you can’t hide. Eventually, they usually must be dealt with in some way. Not many people enjoy confrontation, but facing your problem usually is less painful in the long run. Bullies are a problem for adults as well as children and no one should feel that they have to put up with such ridiculous and immature behavior. Bullying can take many forms. Some bullies prefer to use physical intimidation. Others use bullying methods like taunting and abusing verbally. Neither is acceptable. There are even people who use their computers now for bullying people. The ability to reach huge numbers of people with the click of a mouse has made torturing victims all too easy for these people who have now become known as cyber-bullies.
Once you have established what type of bully you are dealing with, you must decide how you are going to go about dealing with them. Cyber bullies should be ignored if possible. They enjoy seeing that they are able to make others uncomfortable. For other types of bullies, avoiding them when possible is still a valid strategy. This is not to say that you should spend your life running away from them, but you should not walk into obvious situations that could get ugly.
Children who are being bullied should let a trusted adult know about the situation. Often things look terribly intimidating to a child who is being bullied. They should know that talking to their parents about the situation is usually the best thing they could do. They should never feel that they have to deal with a bully alone.
Bullies depend on the victim not being willing to confront them or do anything about the behavior. Often, calling them on their behavior is all that is needed. It can be difficult, but learning how to deal with bullies is an important life skill that every person should know.
