If you want to learn how to jump higher for any sport, you have to learn some basic vertical jump training.
The first thing you must learn are some good plyometric workouts to really build the speed you need. Lets take a look at some great ways to NOT build you jump.
The worst thing you could do would be jump rope. If you are jumping rope, you are simply building up a lot of endurance and that is not going to help you in your goal. Any good jump program like the Jump Mentor will teach you that you must have explosive workouts in order to increase your vertical leap.
Now if you don’t want to risk injury, I would suggest you build up some good muscle before you start training. This will ensure that you have tendons strong enough to withstand the impact from doing plyos. Plyometrics are the best way to jump higher but only if used in the proper way. You don’t always need an expert in the field like Cade Orvin or Jacob Hiller to explain how to do plyos correctly. You simply need to treat the ground as if it were on fire and you don’t want to touch it for any longer than you have to.
It’s all about quickness when it comes to jump training and the more you understand that, the better you will be. If you are going to learn to dunk or spike a volleyball better, you will take this type of training very seriously.
So what are some good workouts you can do?
The good old squat is a great exercise and it builds some good muscle. Doing only squats will not really improve you vertical leap very much though. You need to incorporate plyos at the appropriate time in order to get the best results.
