There are a lot of reasons that people want to start their own vending business, but the freedom of not having to answer to a boss or be confined in a corporate prison are probably two of the biggest reasons. Most people have reoccurring fantasies of turning in their two week notice or just simply walking out the door and quitting. Who doesn’t like the sound of that? Well, vending can be just the business that allows that fantasy to come true.
However, once a vending route gets to the point that it has 400 – 500 machines, a route may get to the point that being self employed may just end up feeling like a different type of prison. If you got into vending for greater schedule flexibility and freedom then hiring an employee may be the solution you’re looking for. If you got into vending looking to create a profitable income stream, then an employee can also help you expand beyond the point that you would be able to comfortably maintain on your own.
Hiring someone to work on your vending route is a mixed bag, obviously its success hinges on finding just the right person. The best bet is to hire someone you know, such as a retired family member or a friend’s teenager. This is the safest solution, but not always practical. You may have to resort to hiring someone out of an online source or the local paper. This is a lot riskier proposition and should be pursued with caution.
When it comes to keeping employees honest, you have two options: software and spot checks. You can buy software that allows you to keep track of all your coin drops so that you know exactly how much is in each vending machine. For small venders, this solution may be too expensive and not worth the investment. Spot checks are free but more time intensive, prior to your employee servicing a location, you run out and do a quick count. By checking several locations a couple times a month, you can see if the employee is doing accurate reporting or skimming money.
