If you have any doubt of the ability of hybrid golf clubs to lower your golf score, just turn your television on this weekend and count the number of pros who are using these clubs. these guys play the game for a living, and there is real money at stake every week. they are not going to use equipment just because some manufacturer asks them to. they will only use it if it gives them a chance to win, or at least place higher in the standings.
For most amateurs, this is a no brainer. Using hybrid clubs will lower your score, unless you go out of your way to let that not happen! these clubs are more forgiving, and even mishit shots go straighter and further than those same mis hit shots when played with traditional irons. In general, hybrid should replace your 3, 4, and 5 irons. these are by far the hardest clubs in the bag for most amateurs to hit consistently. With a hybrid, you are hitting a club with a larger head and a shorter shaft than a corresponding iron. Any time you can hit a shorter club, you are going to hit the ball more consistently. Now add in the fact the face is wide and rounded at the bottom, as opposed to blade like as in a long iron, and it should be easier to understand why hybrids are easier to hit.
One mistake commonly made when a player first starts to hit hybrids is they think they should hit them like they do a fairway wood. Yes, hybrid clubs do look like fairway woods, but if you use your fairway swing with them you will be making a mistake. You actually want to use the same swing you used with your long irons when playing your hybrids. The basics of the correct swing are placing the ball slightly back in your stance, and hitting the ball on the downstroke. Sound familiar? it should, as that is how you should be playing long irons. Now take that swing and use it consistently with your new hybrid golf clubs. the result will be a lower score, and in golf that is a good thing!
