Help Your Friends With Sympathy Plants

Posted on June 20, 2010 | Category: Featured, Gardening Trivia

It can be difficult to deal with when a friend is grieving. You don’t want to seem intrusive, but at the same time you want to help them any way you can. One simple way to lift their spirits unobtrusively is by giving them sympathy plants. While they may want to keep to themselves for a while, they can still receive gifts. Perhaps when you give them a piece of nature, you will help change their perspective on their hardships.

Choosing the Plant

There are many gifts you could give, but some are more appropriate for the situation. Roses are generally symbols for happy times, so for difficult times you want to chose something different. Sympathy plants often have less color and are less extravagant than other gift plants. While they don’t have flowers most of the time, the ones that do should have white flowers, as that is an acceptable grieving color. For expert advice, you can go talk to your local florists. They know the ins and outs of this issue very well. It is their job to know. They can tell you what the traditions are for your situation and give you a nudge towards the best decision.

Plants as Gifts

Plants have a fascinating ability to transform human emotions in an instant. When you catch a glimpse of a beautiful green plant at the right time, it can turn your state right around and give you a sense of peacefulness and relaxation. Maybe this is due to our subconscious seeing all the great things plants do for us. Or perhaps our unconscious minds recognize that nothing is destroyed, all life simply changes its form. So when we look at plants, we see the essence of those who have gone in new forms.

Or maybe it is simply their color. No matter what the reasons are, plants have magical qualities. Its a busy world, and it can be difficult to rearrange your schedule, even to see a suffering friend. But even the busiest corporate executive can find the time to order a sympathy plant. Perhaps by doing so, your close friend will see that their “tragedy” is actually just the circle of life, and they’ll recognize how beautiful the world can be.
