Being forced to deal with all of the arrangements that suddenly have to be made following the death of a loved one can be one of the most difficult, if not traumatic, experiences that anyone goes through. In fact, there could not be a worse time to be making those decisions.
Most people go to great lengths to avoid discussing death and all of the issues surrounding it until they absolutely cannot put it off any longer. What they don’t realize is that this very act of avoidance makes it far worse than it has to be and I think we can all agree that it’s something that is already hard enough. A far better course is to have frank and open discussions with family and friends long before even the hint of necessity enters the picture.
When an individual passes away without having taken care of burial arrangements and making last wishes known, it falls to immediate family members to try and make what they hope will be the right decisions. One of the more emotional considerations and one that has caused considerable disagreement and emotional heartache for families is whether there will be a regular burial or if the body will undergo the cremation process.
Cremation has become very popular in recent years. While a few religions still remain opposed, most people see it as a viable option. One reason is that it allows the family far more flexibility in the timing and planning of a memorial service. The biggest advantage, however, may be in the cost savings.
Even though the shift toward making purchases from retailers like online and discount casket stores have created ways to lessen the cost, a traditional funeral and burial is extremely expensive. In fact, after home and car, it ranks next on the list of most costly expenses. Cremation costs are very reasonable. Especially in today’s economy, that alone is reason enough to consider it.
