When it comes to looking for a garage storage solution, there are several options to choose from including shelving, bins, hooks and cabinets. Cabinets tend to work well because they are very versatile, offering the ability to store items as well as keep them out of sight or locked in place with doors and or locks included. They also have the flexibility of being able to be stored either on the floor or wall mounted so they are easily adaptable to any type of design that you or your decorator comes up with.
One thing that you want may want to stay away from when it comes to garage cabinets is using anything that contains rollers, casters or wheels underneath them, unless it is a specific type of tool cabinet that will allow you to easily transport your tools around the garage as you work on various projects. If the cabinet is not going to be used for that purpose, then there are several disadvantages of buying cabinets that include those features. Here is a look at them:
Uneven floors – depending on the age of the house and the level of the land the house was built on, most likely your garage floor is going to be sloped in some way. If you line two cabinets up next to each other, they are most likely not going to match up and be perfectly level which instead of giving you a nice clean line look is going to look mismatched. There is also a chance that the cabinet will rock when touched at the top because not all of the wheels or rollers remain in contact with the ground at all times.
Non-stop movement – cabinets that have locking casters are never stable as they still provide some type of movement when touched so they are never really stable in the truest sense of the word.
Design and Look – while the uneven floors present a challenge from the top view, you also are likely to see cabinets not lined up perfectly in the front because the slant of the walls and the makeup of the cabinets.
Safety – at a certain height, usually over five feet or so, you are going to want to make sure that the cabinet is fastened to the wall to prevent an accident from occurring and the unit tipping over. There is no need to be able to have the cabinet movable if it is going to be attached and a permanent fixture on the wall.
Most cabinets will provide a nice clean look and feel to the garage and they are also flexible enough to be stored in a several different positions. If you want to get the best benefit from them in terms of the cosmetic appearance of the garage, then you should consider staying away from those cabinets that have movable parts underneath.
