Five Factors Determine Liposuction Cost

Posted on January 22, 2010 | Category: Medical Trivia

Five factors determine liposuction cost: the specific body areas to be reduced, the type of procedure, the type of facility in which the procedure takes place, your physician’s level of experience, and the geographical region where the facility is located.

Typical fees for an individual procedure in the United States range from $1,500 to $4,000 for buttocks to $3,000 to $7,500 for the abdomen. Liposuction of the upper arms will run anywhere between $1,500 and $5,000 while liposuction of the thighs will set you back between $2,000 and $5,000. The variation reflects the amount of time it takes a physician to perform the procedure safely and competently. Most physicians will offer a discount if you choose to have more than one area treated at a time.

Ultrasound-assisted liposuction is generally more costly than more standard liposuction because of the nature of the specialized equipment involved.

Liposuction can be performed either in a physician’s office, a satellite surgery clinic or a hospital. It will be considerably more expensive in a clinic or a hospital since, in addition to your physician’s fees, you will also have to pay facility fees, as well as the cost of any pre-surgery laboratory tests that may be required.

Additionally, there is considerable variation among physicians’ own fee schedules. Inexpensive lipo is not necessarily better: liposuction is not an area where you want to impose false economies. An experienced doctor will charge fees commensurate with his or her level of expertise.

Finally, liposuction procedures overseas are often considerably cheaper than they are in the United States (though you do have to factor in the cost of your plane ticket and hotel expenses.) There are many state-of-the-art facilities in places like India and Thailand although you would be wise to ask for endorsements and talk to some satisfied customers beforehand.

Remember that in most cases liposuction is considered an elective procedure and therefore will not be covered by health insurance. You will be paying completely out of pocket here, so the smart consumer is one who calculates all liposuction costs – including the hidden ones – upfront.
