Formal wear does not have to break the bank or ruin a budget. It doesn’t take much to look as classy and elegant as a modern day Audrey Hepburn. The rules are simple though, simplicity being one of them:
Do not go over the top with decoration. The first tip off of a cheap dress is flare. Too many rhinestones, shiny fabric, and overtly trendy features are obvious signs that somebody was cutting corners on a dress. The best thing to do with an inexpensive formal dress to make it appear that you paid top dollar is to pick a simple, lovely, flattering dress that doesn’t call too much attention to itself. You are after all wearing this dress, not the other way around. If you must have a touch of trendy, put on an accessory that pops to show off your vibrant personality.
Scanty outfits are dead giveaways. Always keep cleavage and leg to a minimum. Even the most expensive dresses look cheap with cutouts and too much skin. The idea is to look attractive and show off your figure, but keep something to the imagination. This way, you’ll be remembered long after the party as being gorgeous and demure, and not as having attention-seeking behavior.
Pick a cut that you know looks good on you. Make it so that you are what people notice, not the dress. The dress is just a compliment. Depending on your figure, choose a good cut and fit, and you will look better in your economical find than any woman at the party sporting a designer look.
Remember to stay elegant and wear what you are comfortable in. Make sure people notice you for you and the dress should simply be a compliment to your personality. Paired with the right accessories, you can even make a bold statement with a formal dress you found on the cheap.
