It’s time to take a trip. Remember how much work it used to be packing for a trip when it was just you? Well things have tripled now that the kids are here. Along with your black luggage you more than likely will have Scooby Doo or Disney Princess luggage too. The best way to enjoy your trip is to keep stress levels down. The easy way to keep stress levels down is to plan ahead and be prepared. Use your noggin and expect the unexpected and you just may have a better trip than you expected.
Let’s sit down and put on our thinking caps. We will plan things step by step. First off maybe we can make the timing of our flights and trips work in our favor. What I mean by this is nap times and mealtimes should be taken into account when planning your flight time. Eating can be a great diversion and time killer so if you have your lunch soon after the flight takes off and nap time follows that you are almost home free.
Take some time to think about what emergencies may arise on the trip and what would make your life easier if you had it on hand. Space is limited so you can also think about what you could not do without if certain situations arise. I’m talking about dry clothes, diapers, formula, snacks, emergency medicine. Whatever you would need to prevent havoc if an accident or emergency came up.
Does your child like books or drawing. Bring some fun things that will entertain her while traveling. Fortunately there are many travel items available that are compact and fun, don’t have loose parts and don’t make messes. Sticker books and magnetic toys are a hit. You can also hide some surprise toys that will help keep things fresh and interesting. On those long trips you will be glad you took this step.
Books and games are all well and good, but eventually you may need to resort to technology. Having a downloaded movie, video, or cartoon can be a real life saver. Depending on what media you have a DVD may be the best bet for your trip, especially towards the end when you have exhausted all other possibilities. Treats can also be a great diversion. Pamper you child on a trip and their good behavior will pamper you back.
Have you ever heard the expression put your oxygen mask on first? The purpose of this is to make sure you don’t pass out in an emergency so you can take care of your kids. Well this is good advice in life as well. Take care of yourself and you will be able to handle the trip with patience and humor. Two of my favorite Mom qualities. Above all else enjoy your trip and family time.
