The answer to the title question is no… and yes. No, you will not need a 2011 Polaris RZR skid plate if you plan to keep your ATV in your garage or never take it racing offroad.
If you bought your vehicle to fulfill your primal urge for adventure, however, then you will put it through some rough trials. Although you want to get the most action you can out of your ATV, you also want it to protect your investment and get the longest life you can from it.
A secondary but still important consideration for armoring up your vehicle is pure and simple – appearance. If you want to tell the world that you are a serious off-roader, then you need the aggressive look that skid plates provide. There are several basic types.
Several heavy-duty, full-belly systems of four skid plates are on the market they all cover the underbelly, gas tank, and plastic floorboard. They all are made from heavy-grade aircraft aluminum include hardware. They have access holes for oil changes and other maintenance. The set manufactured by Extreme Metal Products (EMP) claims to be the only one that allows the use of OEM nerf bars.
Nerf bars offer important rollover protection and are usually sold from the skid plate pages of most web sites. Your Polaris may come with its own factory set but if you need or want to replace them, there are many styles offered to help give your vehicle its own unique appearance.
You will also need to cover your CV boots and A-arms. EMP once again is the chief manufacturer of the most popular A-Arm guards. They are CNC cut and formed from 3/16 thick 5052 plate aluminum.
Side rocker panels guards and bang bars are necessary for protecting the sides. Several brands are manufactured. Once again, look for aircraft-weight aluminum for a durable and attractive accessory.
These four basic types of Polaris RZR skid plates are moderately costly but they will pay for themselves many times over as they save your vehicle from tons of expensive repairs. In addition to extending the life of your vehicle, they add an attractive, aggressive look that tells everyone you know what you are doing and you are ready for action.
