Cleaning Indoor Silk Plants Safely

Posted on March 30, 2010 | Category: Decorating Trivia

Though most people prefer to invest in artificial silk plants to avoid the rigors that come with taking care of real plants, such as weeding and watering them, at one point all artificial plants have to take care of and the most common way of doing this is by cleaning them. The major advantage with cleaning indoor silk plants is that the chances of causing damage to them are very minimal if none. To achieve and maintain the shine of your silk plants, you have to adhere to a clear cut cleaning procedure.

When your indoor silk plants are still new, dusting them is often the best cleaning procedure. The best material to use is lamb’s wool duster that does not necessitate the use of any chemicals but picks up all the dust effectively. While cleaning ensures that, you do not let the dust fall off in the room by washing it off in your sink. When it gets to the point where dusting no longer works, the best alternative would be to wash them in cool water. However, before you do this, ensure you check underneath the leaves to confirm if they have glue on them. This will help you determine the degree of warmth of the water to be used.

If you have a bigger bathroom, then the cleaning process will be made easier because you can use soapy water to clean out individual leaves then let the shower water run over the whole plant for the final rinse before letting it dry off. However, you should not be so overzealous with the process because it could make some of the leaves fall off though replacing them is not so hard. Alternatively, you could use an artificial plant cleaner on your indoor silk plants to restore that original shine though it is not so effective and you will be forced to follow it through with soapy water to attain that final shiny look.
