Ceramic ball bearings usage in various applications for frictionless work

Posted on February 19, 2010 | Category: Tools Trivia

Looking at the advantages of using ceramic ball bearings, it is noted that they can stand a lot of heat. This totally due to the fact that ceramic is much lighter than steel and less stronger, but it is able to absorb heat far more quickly and retain it for longer.

The hybrid ceramic ball bearings are made from silicon nitride or silicon carbide or zirconium. The fact that is able to endure a lot of stress and heat has been tested with aerospace technology. The material used to construct these balls is of the same material used for aerospace shuttles when they are about to enter the earth’s atmosphere. The heat shields are on the outside of the space shuttle, to stop it from heating up and falling apart. The sheeting does contain a huge amount of highly processed silica and ceramic material. They are as one can believe from the proven technology that this is the material that makes the space shuttle indestructible. So, there is that advantage over steel balls. Other laboratory tests have show that the ceramic ball bearings will last far longer than their conventional counter parts.

The development of ceramic ball bearing has not been without problems. At first the biggest difficulty was having to deal with the brittleness of it all. On the other hand steel balls surfaces damage easily, causing welding which prevents it from being lubricated thoroughly. This is not so with ceramic balls, they are able to resist all this. Overall, ceramic balls have a greater margin of 40-50% than steel balls when in action.
Ceramic ball bearings are used in many ways, because of their unique tensile quality. Being a load bearing ball it does give a high level of support in the following industries-: aircrafts, biotech equipment, pumps, compressors, precision mills, X-ray machines and a whole host of other uses also.
