Can You Wear Straw Golf Hats on the Golf Course?

I am a huge golfer. I’ll play rain or shine, hot or cold. And I love to look good when I’m out there playing. That means I like to show up in plaid golf pants like Ian Poulter, vintage golf pants like the late Stewart Payne, and all one color like Rickie Fowler. But I haven’t quite gotten myself to the level of trying to pull of the straw golf hat yet, and I’m not sure if I will.

And, instead of rationalizing it out inside my head, I thought I’d write a little article about it and see if anyone else was interested in the topic too.

I think we all know the two players that popularized straw golf hats back in the day, right? Greg Norman and Tom Kite. I think Greg Norman did it because he thought it made him look like a cowboy, and he wore his hats a little more fashionable, like a cowboy might. You know what I’m talking about, like with the sides curled up. He was probably the closest person to ever pull off looking cool on a golf course with a straw hat on.

Tom Kite, on the other hand, threw caution to the wind when thinking about fashion. Not only did he wear all of his clothes a size too big, he wore the kind of straw hat that you’d see every old farmer in Missouri wear – the kind with the flat brim all the way around. You know what I’m talking about. That was never fashionable and probably never will be.

I think if the question, as the title implies, is can you wear straw golf hats on the golf course, I think the answer is yes. I mean, there are certainly no rules against wearing golf hats made of straw out on the course. Hopefully you don’t run into any straw eating animals while you’re out there like horses or cows or something, because you might be in a little bit of trouble.

I think the bigger question is should you wear a golf hat like that on the course. And I think the answer to that is an unequivocal no.
