Hindi movies are an important part of Indian culture, as well as in countries abroad, especially in the United Kingdom, Africa, Pakistan, Afghanistan, South Asia, and even Russia. The films have recently begun to receive worldwide attention, with popularity growing in places like New York City and Hollywood, California. Bollywood, as the Hindi movie industry is affectionately known, is a combination of the names of cities Bombay, of India, and the film capital of Hollywood. The Hindi movie industry is based in the modern city of Mumbai of Southern India.
Bollywood produces the largest amount of films of any industry in the world – even more than the famous Hollywood, California. These movies are most often musicals, and are famous for their elaborate dance routines and theatrical singing, as well as dramatic plot lines featuring star-crossed lovers, evil villains, and dramatic reversals of fortune. Song-and-dance productions are woven throughout the script, and the musical quality is of the utmost importance to the audience. The dialogue in the movies is mostly Hindi, the most widely spoken language in India, along with the Muslim language Urdu.
Bollywood is a booming industry in India, where many people grow up dreaming of being a star in one of the productions. People flock to Mumbai with hopes of landing a role, but few succeed, due to the industry’s clan-like reputation. Those lucky enough to make it often become household names, such as actors Shahrukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, and Dharmendra, who has appeared in more than 200 films. Some of the more famous Hindi actresses include Amisha Patel, Hema Malini, and Aishwarya Rai, who, along with their singing and acting skills, are also famous for their beauty.
