When it comes to boutique guitar amps, the top of the pack has to be the Bogner amp company. Not only are they working on some excellent boutique amp, but they have recently also got into offering more affordable mass produced amps as well.
Originally, Reinhold Bogner repaired and modified amplifiers of some of the greatest professional guitarists in the industry. After reviving and modifying Eddie Van Halen’s beat-up and used Marshall Plexi model in 1989, Reinhold Bogner decided to create Bogner Amps. The German moved to Los Angeles and built modern amps using vintage methods. The amps that are built only use vacuum tubes as opposed to today’s modern integrated circuit chips.
Big tone is what comes out from a Bogner Amp. The Ecstasy series originally came out with two models, the 100a and 100b. Both types use tube circuitry, but they significantly differ in sound produced. This is due to the kind of tubes used in both models. The 100a used 6L6 power tubes, which commonly used by amplifiers made in the United States. The “a” in the model code stands for American. The 100b model used EL34 power tubes, which were a hit with amplifiers in England. This gave a significant voicing thus employing the code “b” for British. Favored by versatile guitarists everywhere, the Shiva model merges the best of both worlds. It creates a glassy clean Fender like channel comparable to classic Twin Reverb models, while the gain channel mimics a hot rodded Marshall JCM 800. The Fish model having only 250 units in existence is a four channel pre-amp that many consider as the Holy Grail of guitar pre-amps. Another rare piece is the Triple Giant model which was created in cooperation with the Hafler Company. Only 25 of these were ever made.
A Bogner Amp may not be well known to musicians, but it can take on any branded amp anytime. These amps are considered a wise investment for any guitarist. Just plug in your favorite guitar and maybe a couple guitar distortion pedals and you are good to go.
