Asian Matchmaking and the Digital Evolution

I don’t think I can say that most of us remember when dating worked through brokering.  Yes, brokering.  There was typically a matchmaker involved somehow and it was their responsibility to introduce possible marriage prospects to each other; and sometimes to chaperone.

The American dating scene has evolved significantly, but because of strong cultural heritage some cultural barriers exist for this evolution to fully take place in the Asian community.  That is until now.  You can now say that Asian matchmaking has fully gone digital.

When searching online you can find many different types of online dating services that cater to the Asian demographic.  Typically this demographic was more polarized between commercial transactions based casual sex, and looking for a marriage partner with no discernible middle ground.  Casual sex among courting couples or just sex for fun are frowned upon.  This made it more difficult to find the right online model to serve this need.

What happened is that the traditional mail order bride model evolved to find its place online.  Asian matchmaking services are much more geared towards finding a life partner for marriage than finding friendship, companionship or casual physical encounters.  And when they are not you will find that they are geared at finding the other extreme… sex.

Another contrast between the traditional cultural dating dynamic and the online space is one of speed versus certainty.  Asian courtship generally takes a while and involves acceptance not only of the partner but of their family.  The online space is by nature built for individuals that make unilateral decisions quickly.  Here is another evolution point.

So at what stage in the process of finding your soul mate do Asian matchmakers play a part? Well the most significant is in the initial introduction.  Once this occurs, the path flows very traditionally into the accepted cultural patterns.  But hey, that is no small feat.  Online Asian matchmakers have opened the doors and paved the way for thousands of relationships that otherwise would not even have had the chance of beginning.
