Are Online Trivia Contests Legit?

question_the_answersWell, I suppose that all depends on what your standards are.  Generally I would say yes, but you need to have have your internet smart filters on to avoid getting caught up in some big corporations marketing scheme.  Corporations rely on the fact the people love playing trivia contest and games to market their stuff.  One of the most popular tactics they use, is getting you to submit your email before you play the game.  Typically the game or contest is closely related to the category the product their trying to sell is in.  While it’s been said before, I think it’s a lesson worth repeating.  Everyone needs at least two email addresses these days.  One that’s disposable, and one you give to all your friends, family and trusted businesses.  That way you can just give the fake one to any trivia quizzes looking to send you junk mail after you do the quiz.  It’s what I do.

Personally, I really like taking part in trivia contests.  I like the competitive nature of it, and I like proving I’m just a little bit smarter than the next guy.  I think we’ve all got a bit of that streak in us.  Plus, we all seem to think that we’re trivia experts these days, wit the internet at our disposal.  I use to be a big deal when you could recite the top 4 biggest home run hitter in MLB.  Nowadays, we just look it up online on our cell phone over a 3G network.  But, it’s that guys and gals that can do it without looking at a LCD that really impress me.  I used to work with a guy that could name the artist and song from any 60s era song he heard within a few notes.  It’s those kind of people and that competitive smart-guy streak in all of us that made shows like Name That Tune, and Jeopardy so popular.

Buy, I seem to be digressing a little.  Getting back to the original question, yes most online trivia contests are legit.  They’re just for fun, and if the worst they do is try to send you a few annoying emails later, than no big deal.  I wouldn’t however turn over any money, credit card numbers, or PayPal information just to play a trivia contest on the web.  Unless it was a site I trusted implicitly, and there’s only a handful of those I know of.  So go ahead smart guy, test your knowledge of trivia online.  But just remember . . . no peeking for the answers.
